Federal Resume

Are you planning to apply for a Federal Job? The government is hiring tens of thousands of employees for a variety of careers as the baby boomers reach retirement age. If you think you can simply upload your civilian résumé to USAJobs and be done with it, you are going to be way behind the curve. I can help you unravel the process. Writing a résumé for a federal position is challenging. Even veterans to the system dread applying for another job. Navigating the federal application system is so difficult that the president actually initiated a federal hiring reform to make the system friendlier to younger professionals who might replace the “brain drain” of baby boomers retiring. You can find out more about it if you type, “OPM hiring reform” into Google.

Despite the president’s best efforts, the application process is still tedious. Creating, or even updating your Federal résumé requires a lot of time and effort. To make sure your résumé gets “forwarded to the selecting official” it requires someone with specialized knowledge, training, and hands on experience. Regardless of whether you are seeking a GS-3 or a GS-15 position, my years of experience can directly benefit your Federal job search.

In addition to résumé assistance, I can provide coaching throughout the process. Having received in-depth training from federal resume guru Katherine Troutman, as well as other Office of Personnel Management professionals, I am very comfortable with the application system from start to finish. I can assist you in determining the occupational series that best fits your skills, the GS level that matches your qualifications and what jobs you can actually apply for. If you are unsure about using the USAJobs website, I can guide you through the uploading documents and completing the questionnaires in Application Manager.

    • Stephanie,
I received it! I am looking forward to working with you!

  2. Just dont know where to start

    • Natalie,
The best place to start is to get your dates of employment on paper. From there, start listing your duties for each job. Let me know if I can help.

  3. I really need help with my federal resume we are going to have a RIF and I do need guidance in updating my resume

  4. Hi Tina I just do know what I am doing wrong on my Federal Resume

    • Honestly, it is a VERY competitive time for employment in the Federal Government right now. With the hiring freeze and reductions in force, it has become more and more difficult for applicants to get the results they are looking for. If you don’t have 100% of the qualifications for the job you are applying for, you’re not likely to have success. On the other hand, if you have 100% of the qualifications and you’re still not having any luck in securing a job interview, it could be your resume. I would be happy to look it over and give you some feedback for free.

  5. I’m currently a federal employee (9 years)and I’m looking for a new position and possible direction within the federal sector. What assistance are you able to offer me at this stage and would it be a waste of time and money to go through this process since I’m already a federal employee?

    • Christina, a keyword rich Federal Resume targeted to a specific job announcement is the best chance at landing an interview and possibly an offer letter.

I do not know where to even begin.
When I was in school they said leave it to one page as you don’t wan to bore the reader. everything have changed so much that I know my resume now is not what needs to be.

    • Hi, Thank you for contacting me! A federal resume is completely different from a private industry resume. It can be up to 10 pages or more! A private industry resume depends on length of career. A rule of thumb is for every 10 years of employment, you can add another page to your resume. Let me know if you have any other questions!

    • Hi Michele,
Basically, I work with clients through telephone consultation and customized worksheets to clarify career goals, expand on your draft, and get a sense for “who you are”, your greatest strengths/unique selling points. Once I’ve completed the draft you have the opportunity to review it and ask questions before we complete the final version. Turnaround time is about 10 business days. Thanks again for contacting me!
